This is crucial for anyone considering a move to the beautiful, peaceful countryside of Amelia, Virginia. If you’re dreaming of wide-open spaces, starry nights, and a slower pace of life, Amelia might just be your perfect fit. But there’s a few things you must know before you pack those bags!
I’m going to be a little blunt and honest. If you want convenience and stores at your fingertips and within a quick drive then Amelia is probably not your dream location.
First things first—grocery stores. Now, if you’re used to having a supermarket just around the corner, Amelia will require a little adjustment. We’ve got one local option – Food Lion, which has an amazing friendly staff. But if you’re looking for a wide selection of specialty items, you might find yourself driving a bit further to nearby Chesterfield. So, plan your shopping trips accordingly, and don’t forget to stock up!
When it comes to shopping centers, Amelia is all about the charm of small-town living. You’ll find some local businesses, car care stores, three Dollar Generals, and cute little boutiques in town, perfect for those everyday needs or a quick browse. But for a big shopping spree, you will be heading out to Richmond or Midlothian, which is about a 30- to 45-minute drive. It’s all part of the rural lifestyle, and it can be a great excuse for a little road trip!
Now, let’s talk about schools. Amelia County is home to a small but dedicated school system, with Amelia County Elementary, Middle, and High Schools all centrally located together on Otterburn and Five Forks Roads. These schools are known for their tight-knit community and personalized attention to students. And for those interested in private education Amelia Academy is an option as well. For more information on our schools visit greatschools.org or the Virginia Department of Education.
As for recreational amenities Amelia offers our Department of Parks and Recreation with adult and youth options. The sports and camps offered throughout the year include options for: football, softball, soccer, pickleball, cheerleading, volleyball, among others. Also, Amelia is home to the Amelia Wildlife Management area features hiking trails, horseback riding, fishing, archery shooting, hunting, and range.
For dining out options Amelia offers locally owned restaurants including Mi Jalisco for a Mexican dining option, Eazy’s Kitchen and Bar serving drinks and delicious food in the Courthouse Square, Dogged State Diner offering an old fashioned diner experience in the heart of Amelia. Mario’s Italian Restaurant offers a taste of Italy right here in Amelia! These dining options will give you a taste of true Southern hospitality. But don’t expect a Starbucks on every corner.
As for other amenities—Amelia offers the essentials, a library, Amelia Memorial Garden and a beautiful Courthouse Square. Living here means embracing the quiet, the community, and the charm of small-town life. It’s a place where you might have to drive a little further for some things, but the peace and tranquility you’ll find are worth every mile.
So, if you’re considering making the move to Amelia, Virginia, it’s important to weigh the convenience of daily living with the lifestyle you’re looking for. Yes, you might be trading a quick trip to the mall for a longer drive, but what you’ll gain in return—like a close-knit community, stunning landscapes, and a slower pace of life—might just be exactly what you’ve been searching for.
