Amelia County is located just southwest of Richmond. It’s a small county full of history and southern charm.  In 1734, Amelia was created from parts of Prince George and Brunswick counties.   It was named after Princess Amelia, daughter of King George II of Great Britain. During the Civil War General, Robert E. Lee and his Army spent April 4 and 5, 1865, at Amelia Courthouse before his surrender to General Ulysses S. Grant at Appomattox. The last major battle of the war was fought at Sayler’s Creek on April 6.  Amelia has been the birthplace of Authors, a Medal of Honor recipient, a Senator, an Actress, and even an Olympian. 

Amelia Court House, also known as Amelia, Amelia County, or Amelia Courthouse, has a lot to offer while keeping the small-town feeling.   Amelia County provides its residents and businesses the best of both worlds. Located just 35 miles southwest of the State Capital and with access to a significant highway, Rt. 360,  you can enjoy the rural atmosphere and still work in the city. 

Amelia is predominantly an agricultural community, but with new subdivisions and businesses opening, it’s adding more economical and employment potential.  Our little town is growing by leaps and bounds partly because we have the 5th lowest tax burden of any county in the Nation, within a top 50 metro area.  While it is still a rural community, there are retail, dining, and entertainment to enjoy.   There are also several local clubs, volunteer opportunities, numerous churches, and civic events to help you get to know the community.

Enjoy the outdoors?  We have everything from hiking, bird watching, hunting, fishing, metal detecting, equestrian trails, boating, and camping. Like to fish?  Amelia has 50 miles of Appomattox River frontage.  The Amelia Wildlife Management Area is 2,217 acres of hardwoods, swampland, and fields, with a 100-acre lake.  The lake boasts an abundance of largemouth bass along with channel cats, crappie, bluegill, and sunfish. It’s open for equestrian trail rides, hunting, hiking, primitive camping and is handicap accessible.  Amelia Wildlife Preserve is part of the Heart of the Piedmont loop. The Heart of the Piedmont Loop takes visitors into a series of state forests, state parks, and wildlife management areas with large tracts of deciduous and coniferous forest to explore. It also takes you through the site of the last major Civil War battle in Virginia at Sailor’s Creek. After losing 7,700 men and 8 generals, Robert E. Lee made his way to Appomattox. Sailor’s Creek State Park is a great place to visit.  They offer many family-friendly activities, reenactments, trails to hike, bird watching opportunities, stargazing events, Geocaching, and a museum.  Nestled on the edge of Amelia, with cattle farms and open fields, you can almost feel like you stepped back in time.  A beautiful place to have a picnic or take family photos.  The Hillsman House at Sailor’s Creek was once used as a hospital, and each year, they hold a Veteran’s Day Luminarie program that you don’t want to miss. Their Antebellum St. Nicholas is an excellent addition to the holiday season, and seeing the house decorated in the tradition of the 1800s is a real treat.

In Amelia, we love our small-town events.  Every 2nd Saturday of May, all of Amelia comes out to the Courthouse Square for Amelia Day. It celebrates the county’s founding with vendors, artisans, locally grown plants, charity organizations, and lots of entertainment.  The elementary school children sing, Studio Energy and Motion does a dance production, and local Singers and musicians entertain the crowd from the stage set up right on the Courthouse steps. Bring a chair or a blanket and enjoy the day.  Thanks to all the hard work from the Volunteers, this event is always FREE.  In the fall, we have the Amelia County Fair, which lasts for a week and offers Amusement rides, entertainment, and local vendors and businesses.  Plus the Amelia Fright Fest in October. Fright Fest is a hike through Amelia’s most haunted woods that combines old-school style scares with high-quality gore/makeup and top-notch acting.  There are also craft shows, Car Shows, and Church Gatherings all year long.  It’s that old-time feeling and love your neighbor type of town.

Amelia is home to one of the Virginia Department of Veterans Service Cemeteries. Located on Pridesville Rd, and is part of the Blue Star Memorial Highway.  Wreaths Across America at Christmas time and the ceremonies on Memorial Day and Veterans Day draw people from all over.

Amelia Frightfest  Amelia Frightfest is Central Virginia’s most terrifying haunted trail  A horror hike through Amelia’s most haunted woods, Amelia Frightfest combines the “old-School” haunted attraction build with a focus on high-quality gore/makeup and top-notch acting.

Sailor’s Creek Battlefield State Park has a list of events on their website.  They offer lots of family friendly activities year long. Including reenactments, Luminaries, crafts, and guided tours and hikes. 

Coverly Farm Fall Festival where you can pick your pumpkin, hay rides, corn maze, petting zoo, barrel cart train, and more. 

Woods Tree Farm has lots of events like picking your own wildflowers and sunflowers,  pre-cut Christmas trees, handmade wreaths, Christmas ornaments and other decorations.

Field Day of the Past is a family event sponsored by the Rockville-Centerville Steam and Gas Historical Association. This show mixes the warm, down-home atmosphere of the county fairs of yesteryear with exhibits and displays of museum quality. In the summer of 1992, a few steam and gas engine collectors gathered for an informal discussion on the possibility of hosting a steam and gas engine show. They organized the Rockville-Centerville Steam and Gas Historical Association and hosted its first show, which attracted 5,000 people. Today the show has expanded into a 3 day event, held the third full weekend in September and draws a crowd of approximately 35,000 people annually.

Amelia County Christmas Parade is held the first Saturday of December.  The annual Amelia County Christmas Parade steps off from Wayside Avenue and proceeds west on Goodes Bridge Road (Bus. Rt. 360) on Saturday (Dec. 7). The parade then turns left onto Amelia Street and right on Church Street, then turns right on Washington Street, where the judge’s review is located in front of the Beopple building (all entries are required to pause for review and will be directed when to continue). The parade then turns left onto Court Street, and left again onto Virginia Street, where the parade will disband near Wells Fargo.

Amelia County Public Schools Events are normally advertised in the Amelia Bulletin Monitor and on the School’s Facebook Page.  There is the Homecoming Parade, sporting events, a craft show, and several fundraiser events like flower sales, food sales, and volunteer opportunities throughout the year.

Amelia Golf and Country Club  AGCC is a challenging semi-private 9 hole golf course located in the heart of Amelia County.  As a club member, you’ll enjoy unlimited golf for low quarterly dues, members-only tournaments, pool privileges and clubhouse rental privileges. In addition to a great course, we offer a driving range and practice putting green so you can develop your golf game. Members can participate in weekly tournaments such as Senior League, Twilight and Handicap Tournaments during the middle of the week . We offer a state-of-the-art Paramount treadmill, Stairmaster, recumbent bike, and a variety of weight equipment to help you meet your fitness goals. Plus we offer group sports for all ages.

Pickleball and Tennis Outdoor Courts We provide two (2) outdoor pickleball and tennis outdoor courts with a hard asphalt surface and an acrylic color system. Nets are provided for Tennis and Pickleball. Lighting is also available.

Amelia County Memorial Garden located behind the Amelia Historical Society at 16501 Church St.  It’s maintained by the Amelia Garden Club and a perfect spot for pictures or to read a great book.  Look carefully because many Amelians will paint rocks and hide them in the Garden throughout the year.

High School Track located behind Amelia High School.  It is a quarter mile track that is open to the public when school is not in session.

Playgrounds: Amelia Elementary school playground is open to the public when school is not in session.  Parks and Recreation playground located at Joe Paulette Park on Five Forks Rd is open year round.  And there is a small playground behind the Historical Society next to the Memorial Garden.

Equine therapy  Spun’n Up Hope Inc  Dusty Spur Farm, the home of Spur’n Up Hope Inc, was created in 1998 when Lee Williams (owner) and her children moved back to her family farm in Amelia, VA.  At that time, God put it on her heart that she needed to use the farm to help at-risk youth.  Spur’n Up Hope Inc is a culmination of her prayers, God’s plan and her life experiences.  It has taken many volunteers and special horses to cultivate this dream into reality. Woods Tree Farm  Our 43 acre property includes over 20 acres of mature hardwood forest with running streams, a one acre pond, and three separate fields of grasses and Christmas trees. Starting the day after Thanksgiving, we’ll have a tree lot set up with a selection of fresh, pre-cut, Virginia-grown fir and spruce trees for sale along with ornaments, wreaths, hot chocolate and s’mores!

Virginia Cooperative Extension  The Amelia County Extension Office, a cooperative venture between the Federal Government, the Commonwealth of Virginia and Amelia County, provides a wide variety of programs and services to the youth and adults of Amelia County. Amelia Veterans Cemetery The Department of Veterans Services (DVS) is organized into seven service delivery sections:  benefits; veteran and family support; veterans education; transition and employment; care centers; veterans cemeteries; and the Virginia War Memorial.  The Board of Veterans Services, the Joint Leadership Council of Veterans Services Organizations, and the Veterans Services Foundation work closely with DVS to support the effective delivery of services to Virginia’s veterans and their families.

Amelia County Historical Society and Museum A nonprofit citizens’ organization founded in 1958 to discover, procure, preserve, and present for study and research artifacts and documents depicting the natural, civic, architectural, and literary histories of Amelia County. Located in the Jackson Building at the corner of Virginia and Church Streets across from the CourtHouse Square, the society maintains a small library of general, legal, and genealogical materials, plus display cases with numerous artifacts, including of the Civil War. Sailor’s Creek Battlefield State Park  Nearly a quarter of Confederate Gen. Robert E. Lee’s army, more than 7,700 men, were killed, wounded or captured on April 6, 1865, at the battle of Sailor’s Creek. Lee surrendered his army 72 hours later at Appomattox Court House. The Overton-Hillsman farmhouse, circa 1780, is open to the public for guided tours. The house was restored to reflect the 1865 conditions the family and soldiers experienced when the house served as a Union field hospital.

The park’s visitor center houses exhibits showcasing artifacts and research about the battles of Sailor’s Creek and the war’s impact on the citizens of Southside Virginia. Visitors will be taken back that wet spring day when both armies and a galaxy of generals met at Sailor’s Creek for what was the last major battle of the American Civil War in Virginia. Living history events take place every April during the anniversary of the battle.

Civil Rights in Education Heritage Trail Historical Markers A Self-Guided Driving Tour Through Southside Virginia.  Virginia has led the nation in many ways, particularly in education. The birthplace of the free public education system our country now enjoys has its roots right here in Southside Virginia. It was here, along the sleepy back roads of a few rural counties, that today’s African Americans, Native Americans and women developed the right to an education that equaled that of white males.  Today, a new self-guided driving tour brings together  these historically significant sites and tells the poignant and often explosive story of civil rights in education in our country.

Russell Grove School In 1933, Russell Grove High School opened in the chapel at Russell Grove Presbyterian Church. Susie Shepperson, who had held a position at Virginia State College for Negroes (now Virginia State University), came to manage the school and was its sole teacher for the first year. During Russell Grove School’s first two years, four acres of land were purchased in order to construct a school building, while teachers, the County-Wide League, and others jointly raised over $2,500 for the new school. The School Board led construction of a brick building with four classrooms, an auditorium, a library, and an office, as well as a frame building that served as a workshop. In 1937, Russell Grove High School’s fourth year, ten boys and sixteen girls formed the school’s first graduating class. 

Virginia Scenic Drives: Lee’s Retreat Five stops of the over 20-stop driving tour, Lee’s Retreat, are located in Amelia County and allow visitors to follow the Route of General Robert E. Lee’s Troops from Petersburg to Appomattox during the final seven days of the Civil War in April 1865. Tour Stops: South Side Station, The Breakthrough, White Oak Road, Five Forks, and Sutherland Station.

Amelia County Courthouse This small unincorporated town was established in 1789 after Nottoway County was carved from Amelia County, necessitating a new central location for the county seat. Like the town itself, the spacious Amelia Courthouse Square is unpretentious and pleasant. The brick courthouse is set well back on the square and its form reminiscent of its 1850 predecessor that was demolished after it was found to be “dangerous to human life.” The design is by an architect and general contractor who immigrated from Thailand. Most of his designs were residences, but he also built warehouses and a few public buildings. Amelia’s court clerks’ offices contain records dating to before the Civil War, unlike many other courthouses that lost such records in wartime destruction. The Union forces were rushing to catch up to Lee’s Army of Northern Virginia and did not ensure the courthouse records were burned. The iron shutters and brick construction of the courthouse protected its contents.

St. John’s Episcopal Church, Grub Hill  Consecrated in 1852 by Bishop William Meade, this church was a product of the reactivation of the Episcopal denomination in rural Virginia during the mid-19th century. It is on the site of a colonial church known simply as Grub Hill Church, a name derived from the “Grub Hill” slave quarters of the Tabb family, who gave the land for the building. The present church, a country builder’s version of the Gothic Revival, has an honest simplicity that yet inspires admiration. It remains relatively unaltered and is enhanced by a pleasant rural setting. The principal interior furnishings, including an ornamented triptych, are the signed work of a woodcarver, H. Jacob, completed in 1870. Owned by the trustees of Christ Episcopal Church, Amelia, St. John’s is used for occasional summer services.

The Amelia County Animal Shelter and Animal Control Office has two full-time and one part-time employee. The Animal Control Department utilizes a vast array of volunteers and volunteer groups to make the Amelia County Animal Shelter among the most efficient Public Shelters in the Commonwealth of Virginia at having animals adopted. 

Consequently, in recent years, the Animal Control Department has become a multi faceted organization balancing citizen safety with animal protection. Last year Amelia housed approximately 1,500 animals, which is nearly three times the number of animals that were housed in 1996. However, by maintaining a high degree of excellence, care and concern for our animals and their ultimate adoption, we can proudly say that we have become one of the top shelters of rural Virginia.  Animal Control officers work closely with County Law Enforcement to enforce state laws and county ordinances as they apply to domestic animals.

The shelter includes six (6) large dog runs, allowing us to house twelve (12) large dogs at one time.  The shelter also has a puppy room with stainless steel rolling cages.

Amelia County requires that all dogs residing in the County four months of age or older are required by Article IV, Section 4.1 of the county ordinance, to have and display a county dog license/tag.  In order to obtain the license, citizens must present the original copy of a current rabies vaccination certificate signed by a licensed veterinarian.

Dog licenses are on sale from January 1st to January 31st of each year.  All citizens owning or kenneling dogs are required to license each animal.

Amelia County does not have a countywide leash law.  However under Article II, Sec. 2.2 of the Amelia County Animal Control Ordinance, a leash law is in effect for the following areas of the County:

Amelia County requires that all dogs residing in the County four months of age or older are required by Article IV, Section 4.1 of the county ordinance, to have and display a county dog license/tag.  In order to obtain the license, citizens must present the original copy of a current rabies vaccination certificate signed by a licensed veterinarian.

Dog License are on sale from January 1st to January 31st of each year.  All citizens owning or kenneling dogs are required to license each animal.
